Google has added several data protection features for parents on Android OS.
Our children are constantly asking our phone to play a game, watch a video or for something else.
Allowing our kids to operate on our smartphone can almost mean risking the important data and files we have on it.
Children like to press buttons, they can remove half of the applications just because they learned how to remove an application, …and I think it’s cool. I mean it shows that they have learned something.
You never know what will happen to a smartphone when it comes back from a child.
Fortunately, Android developers are also parents, and they introduced new features specifically for parents and privacy lovers.
Version 5.0 (Lollipop) of the Android OS started to add two new features that help to limit the behaviour of a child on a smartphone.
The operating system now has “guest mode” and “screen pinning” features.
Let’s learn about these features and how you can enable them on your Android phone.
Note: These features require that Android 5.0 (or latter) is installed on your device. Because the older versions of the operating system do not have them.
What is Guest mode?
The guest mode feature allows you to create a new guest user profile that your child can use (or anyone else who uses your phone).
This profile is isolated from your personal profile so that it is impossible to change or view any of your data, images, videos, even your applications.
They can install applications from the Google Play store, and if the application is already on your phone, it will be copied to the guest profile (without downloading it again).
In addition, you can create personal profiles for each of your children, so that they will have their own set of applications, wallpapers, and other settings.
How to set up guest mode on your phone
1. At the top part of the screen, swipe down to open the notification panel.
2. Double-click on the image of your profile in the upper right corner. Three icons will appear, your Google Account, “Add Guest” and “Add User”.
3. Select the option “Add Guest”.
4. Once you have selected the Add Guest option, it will take a couple of minutes to complete the guest mode setup process. You will also set a name for the guest there.
When you’re done with guest mode, you can return to your profile by repeating the first two steps above.
So, if you set up a profile account for a particular child, you just have to follow the above steps and click on that profile whenever you want to give your phone to him or her. When clicked on, it will take some little time for the settings and everything associated with the account to load and come up on the phone.
Sometimes you need to give your phone to someone to show them something, but you don’t want them to leave the application, where the thing you want to show them is, and see your personal data.
Perhaps you want your child to play a game, but do not want to give full access to the phone.
For such situations, the Screen Pinning feature is the perfect solution. #Pinning the screen allows you to ensure that the current application does not allow the user to exit and move to other parts of the phone.
They can use an application that is “pinned” in place; but they just cannot exit the application without an unlock code.
How to activate Screen Pinning feature on your phone
1. At the top of the screen, swipe down to open the notification panel.
2. Tap the date and time area in the notification panel, then tap the gear icon to open the settings menu.
That’s the shortest way of getting to the settings menu of your phone.
3. On the Settings menu, tap Security > Advanced > Screen Pinning >, and then set the switch to ON.
Instructions for using Screen Pinning feature are located directly below the setting. Or let’s talk about to do it.
How to pin a screen on your phone
Let’s pin this screen as I type this post…
Click and hold the Recent Button on your phone.
A minimized version of the opened application will show, with a pin icon behind it. If you click on the pin icon that shows up at the down part of the screen, the program will be pinned immediately, while showing you what to do to unpin the application or screen whenever you want to do so.
So here we are. Use the above features whenever you think about securing the data on your phone. From your children. From people.
